When the night is the darkest
I won't be your light
When the night is the darkest
I'll teach you to fight
And we'll swing from the rafters
It might be quite a site

But tonight we just fight
We just fight

When the road is the longest
I won't be your guide
When the road is the longest
I'll ask for a ride
And there'll be lots of laughter
With you by my side

But tonight we just fight
We just fight
Yes tonight we just fight
We just fight

When the dawn's finally breaking
I'll take you by the hand
When the dawn is finally breaking
I'll come join your band

And we'll sing hallelujah
Do cartwheels in the sand

But tonight we just fight
We just fight
Yes tonight we just fight
We all fight
"If there's an 'arc' to this record it's simply related to the year we all just lived through. (2020) While the sequence of the songs isn't strictly in the order that I wrote them, I tried to give the order a structure that somewhat matches the roller coaster 12 months we all just endured.

That said, this is in fact one of the first songs I wrote for this record. It was March 2020. I had just watched the remake of 'The Magnificent Seven'  with my daughter Clara, who was into westerners at the time. The news of the pandemic was just breaking. (Spoiler ahead, although it's hard to spoil any traditional western). In the film, the night before the big gun fight at the end of the movie, the always amazing Denzel Washington's character says something to the effect of 'We're gonna' lose a lot of good people tomorrow'.  It just hit me in some kinda' way. What was coming was a fight. I was hoping I was just being pessimistic. Sadly I wasn't.

My wife Caitlin heard the song in a more universal vein. She thought I was singing about some of our own personal loss we'd recently experienced as a family. The truth is almost every song I write these days, (especially most of those on this album), are indeed informed by my lived experience.  I think that's inevitable for any artist as they mature.

Basically, all life is a fight at some point, right? Which may be almost too obvious a point to even make. But it's one we often have a hard time facing on occasion. It was intense to see most of the world face that fight at the same moment. Together yet separately.  It's a world wide event that both isolated us but may have actually bought us together as a global community.  Hopefully, as of this writing, March 2021, we're finally coming out of this dark period. Maybe the fight is over. For a while. I hope so. Even though I can't really do a cartwheel.Yet."
